Atwater’s History
Atwater is a borough located in the southwestern part of Montreal, Quebec. The area was originally settled by the Mohawk people in the 1600s. The name “Atwater” is thought to come from the Mohawk word “adawe,” meaning “niagara.” In 1796, the land was purchased by Matthew Atwater, an American entrepreneur. Atwater built a sawmill and gristmill on the site, which quickly attracted other businesses and settlers. By 1814, Atwater was home to a population of over 600.
Today, Atwater is a vibrant, multicultural community with apopulation of just over 20,000. The borough is home to many small businesses, as well as a number of large parks and recreational facilities.
